The History of Prada

Miuccia launched the Prada nylon handbags line featuring chain straps and the signature metal triangle Prada logo, which became popular among celebrities, including model Jerry Hall. Miuccia Prada took over from her mother, Luisa Prada, as the new head of the company, which by then had only one store and was losing relevance among luxury brands. Today, Prada is sold in over 70 countries via more than 635 physical stores and online shops, as well as department stores worldwide. The family-owned Prada group has labels like Miu Miu, Church’s, and Prada Luna Rossa under its helm. Prada introduced its first full womenswear collection with a Fall/Winter 1988 show.

Its products include leather goods, handbags, footwear, apparel, accessories, eyewear, and fragrances. Its brands include Miu Miu, Church’s, Cas Shoe, and Pasticceria Marchesi. The company was founded by Mario Prada in 1913 and is headquartered in Milan, Italy.

Months later, Prada paid US$105 million to have full control of Jil Sander A.G., a German-based company with annual revenue of US$100 million. The purchase gained Prada a foothold in Germany, and months later Jil Sander resigned as chairwoman of her namesake company. First launched in 1997, Prada Linea Rossa is the brand’s sports line and was a pivotal moment in the history of Prada and the whole industry, as it merged streetwear with luxury.

In 2020, the Belgian designer Raf Simons joined Prada as co-creative director, working in partnership with Miuccia Prada, sharing equal responsibilities for creative input and decision-making. They introduced their first joint collection in the Spring/Summer 2021 season, which was “a study and a redefinition of the Prada essence” the Prada new uniform, with 1950s accents, sportswear pieces, and the iconic Nylon material. In 2020, the company introduced the Re-nylon Re-edition of 2000 and 2005 bags – a collection consisting of mini bags, totes, shoulder bags, belt bags, and backpacks in multiple colors in addition to the signature black.

The Prada menswear line was introduced in FW95, designed by Neil Barrett; it had nylon as the recurring theme – workwear mixed with utility and luxury. Since 1978, the fashion house has been led by Mario Prada’s granddaughter, Miuccia Prada (Maria Bianchi), who brought Prada to relevance and made it the internationally known luxury brand we now know. The brand has acquired a few smaller brands including, Car Shoe, Pasticceria Marchesi, Miu Miu, and Chruch’s.

Mario Prada believed that women had no place in the workplace, that they should only work in the home. But when it came time to pass the family business to his successor, Mario’s son had no interest in carrying on with the business. Ironically, the family business was passed on to Mario’s daughter, Luisa Prada. Luisa ran Prada for nearly 20 years, contributing significantly to its greatness today.

As part of the sustainability plan, Prada Group announced a fur-free policy for Prada as well as Miu Miu and re-introduced the iconic Prada nylon bags from 2000 and 2005 under the Prada re-nylon range. The iconic Prada Tessuto nylon bag and the Prada Bowler bag, came out. Both designs shaped the noughties Y2K style, worn by the likes of Heidi Klum, Kourtney Kardashian, and Bella Hadid.
