PRADA: About the Italian Luxury Fashion House

Prada’s and Bertelli’s respective businesses were merged to create Prapar B.V. The name, however, was later changed to Prada B.V., and Patrizio Bertelli was named Chief Executive Officer of the Prada luxury company. In 1975, Luisa’s daughter, Miuccia, joined the family business as an accessory designer. In 1977, Miuccia began seeing Patrizio Bertelli, founder of Sir Robert, another leather goods company. Soon enough, Bertelli joined the Prada family business and along with Miuccia, set out to expand Prada into a much larger company. In 1979, Prada added women’s footwear to its product line and it was an immediate success.

The show set the tone for the future Prada’s collections which also were marked by minimalism. It was a huge success and made Prada one of the most coveted brands in the fashion world by the early 1990s. Designer handbags are notoriously expensive, and collectors are willing to pay their premiums. That’s because the most prized brands, such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Hermès, are pieces of art that are more than just a bag. These firms make masterpieces that are so wonderfully created that a multi-billion dollar industry of copycats reproduces them for less.

Prada today has become synonymous with luxury goods and never fails to disappoint year-in and year-out. By the 1990s, Prada was perceived as a luxury brand, a designation credited to originality in its designs. Gucci on the other hand had all the rage at The Met Gala 2022, having styled the likes of Dakota Johnson, Billie Eilish, Jodie Smith, and more. Luxury brands target a specific demographic, primarily contributed by age, gender, income group, and geography. It may be a scary and costly hobby for anyone who finds themselves hooked to handbags. Prada has commissioned architects, most notably Rem Koolhaas and Herzog & de Meuron, to design flagship stores in various locations.

On the fashion scene, Prada has grown into a global luxury fashion brand. In 2022, Prada’s Re-nylon Re-edition 2000 and 2005 mini bag was named Lyst’s ‘Handbag of the Year’, after searches increased by 131%, while views for #pradanylonbag on TikTok generated over 4.2 million views. The founder Mario Prada believed that women had no place in the workplace and should stay at home. So as he approached retirement, he wanted to trespass the family business to his son. However, the latter had no interest in managing the brand, so it was passed on to Mario Prada’s daughter, Luisa Prada. Even though Prada is listed and publicly traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (20%), the majority of 80% is still owned by Prada Holding S.p.A., which allows the luxury fashion house to maintain creative control over its design.

This prestigious honor allowed Prada to use the House of Savoy coat of arms and knotted rope design in its logo, which it has used to this day. Prada is one of the oldest and largest luxury fashion houses, founded in 1913 by Mario Prada in Milan, Italy. According to The Wall Street Journal, Bertelli smashed the windows of the store a day before the opening, after he had become deeply unsatisfied with the set-up. The proposition seemed unlikely, however, because Prada was at the time still a small company and was in debt. LVMH had been purchasing fashion companies for a while and already owned Dior, Givenchy, and other luxury brands. Gucci, however, managed to fend him off by selling a 45% stake to industrialist François Pinault, for US$3 billion.[16] In 1998, the first Prada menswear boutique opened in Los Angeles.
